Laura

member of the board & trainer

From the time Laura was a small child, dogs have been at the heart of her world. Growing up surrounded by them, she was drawn to veterinary science and earned her bachelor’s degree in animal science after high school. Although she initially planned to pursue veterinary school, Laura chose to enter the workforce and spent several years working on a swine farm before landing a role at a veterinary clinic -it was there that she discovered her passion for grooming. While Laura held many responsibilities, grooming quickly became her favorite—it gave her an intuitive connection to each dog, helping them feel safe while earning their cooperation. At the time, Laura didn’t fully understand why her methods worked, only that they did. That curiosity led her to pursue a two-week course in canine behavior, where she gained a deeper understanding of the tools and techniques she had developed organically over the years. It was also during that class that she met Jennifer, someone who helped shape the next chapter of her journey. Today, Laura has been grooming dogs for over 37 years and continues to work one-on-one with owners to improve behavior and enhance their relationship with their pets. She also led the canine program at a local rescue for six years. Now, Laura volunteers with the Jared Burke Foundation, offering outdoor adventures to veterans, individuals with disabilities, those facing terminal illness, bereaved families, and underserved youth. She says its an honor to help bring connection, healing, and joy to lives that need it most.

Brande

board member

Brande spent 10 years in an abusive marriage before finding the strength to leave with her three small children. As part of her journey to recovery, she purchased a handgun and enrolled in an eight-hour beginner pistol class. What began as a practical step toward self-defense quickly ignited a passion. Brande went on to become a competitive pistol shooter, an NRA-certified instructor, and the ammunition project manager at a prominent company in the firearms industry. Her greatest fulfillment came from witnessing the empowerment of women as they embraced the skills and mindset necessary to protect themselves. Today, Brande can be found running her antique store in Potlatch or spending time at home with her menagerie of chickens, ducks, rabbits, goats, burros, dogs, and cats. While she no longer actively teaches, Brande remains committed to helping women discover their strength and self-worth, in whatever form that may take.
